There was no winner of this week’s jackpot of
Waterford United’s position in the new look FAI eircom League of Ireland Premier Division was confirmed this evening, following the decision of Shelbourne not to appeal against revocation of their Premier Division licence and subsequent demotion to the First Division.Shelbourne have accepted the decision of the FAI’s First Instance Committee to revoke their licence but are to appeal two of the conditions attached to the club’s new licence.
Waterford United came from behind to secure a place in the Lucozade Sport Munster Senior Cup after they defeated Rockmount after extra time in their quarter final clash at Rockmount Park in Cork.The Blues fell behind after just ninety seconds when John Busteed put the home side in front. The visitors had a strong wind at their backs but Rockmount coped with everything the Premier league side had to offer.However, the Blues dominated the second half but had to wait until the final minute of the game before captain John Hayes headed home to force the game to extra time.It was midway through the second period of extra time when the Blues were awarded a penalty and Shane Harte stepped up to fire home and send Waterford through the semi finals.
Heavy rain has forced the cancellation of tonight’s pre-season friendly against Cork City which was due to take place at Brideview FC in Tallow.The pitch was inspected last night but overnight rain meant a further inspection was required this morning and the pitch was deemed to be unplayable.

Cronin answers the fans

Waterford United Manager Gareth Cronin was the guest of the revived Waterford United Supporters Club Questions and Answers Session at Philly Grimes in Waterford City on Wednesday evening.The Blues boss attended the function and answered questions posed to him by the large group who attended.”This was a productive evening for me as manager,” commented Cronin. “I answered some interesting questions and I also had the opportunity to set the record straight on a number of items that seemed to gained legs over the last few months.”The Blues boss indicated that he was thrilled to be in the Premier Division and will hopefully sign a few more players before next week’s transfer window deadline.Members of the management committee also confirmed the club will be meeting with Eircom League Director Fran Gavin to discuss various issues surrounding their elevation back to the Premier Division following the revocation of Shelbourne’s Premier Licence.

Bohemians and Drogheda United will compete in what promises to be a mouthwatering opening to the new season on Friday March 9th.
