b]Waterford United 2 – 0 Sporting Fingal[/b]Waterford United recorded an excellent first ever win against league newcomers Sporting Fingal tonight, and in the process move up to second in the league table.Gareth Cronin made a couple of changes to the team which took to the field at Athlone, Luke Fitzpatrick and Kevin Waters making way for Michael Foley and Willie John Kiely, and they weren’t far from paying early dividends as Vinne Sullivan’s clever ball found Kiely in a great position, but the striker was adjudged marginally offside.
Maiden Visit for Sporting Fingal

Waterford United continue their eircom league campaign this Friday evening when they entertain Sporting Fingal in what is the first ever meeting between the sides. The game at the RSC (KO: 7.45pm) already has a six pointer written all over it with Sporting on top of the eircom League First Division while the Blues remain unbeaten in this season’s campaign.

Sean Caffrey’s U-19 squad will be disappointed by the 3-0 losing scoreline but in truth they were outplayed for large chunks of the match by an outstanding French outfit.

b]Athlone Town 0 Waterford United 0[/b]Waterford United couldn’t manage the goal they deserved to take all three points at Lissywoollen tonight, despite piling on the pressure in the second half.A scrappy first half saw Waterford battle against a strong, swirling wind, as well as a resolute home side, for little reward. Their best chance came from a Kevin Waters corner kick on the half hour. The Athlone ‘keeper could only flap at the vicious inswinger, but Nigel Keady was on hand to scramble off the line, with Vinnie Sullivan unable to steer the rebound home.

Waterford United head to Athlone for the first time since November 2002 as they face the Midlanders in series three of the eircom league First Division on Friday evening (KO: 7.45pm). On that occasion they rocked Athlone with a three goal blitz inside the opening twenty minutes and despite a comeback they held on for a 3-2 victory. Apart from an opening own goal, the goalscorers on the night were Daryl Murphy who now plays at Sunderland and Vinny Sullivan who also hit the net against Athlone in a 2-2 draw at the RSC in their other meeting of that championship winning season.
