U20s: Waterford United 0 – 1 Wexford YouthsWaterford United’s Under-20s were desperately unlucky to lose out to Wexford Youths in a hard-fought encounter at the RSC on Sunday. The young Blues squad was stretched to breaking point as striker Kenny Purcell joined the missing list along with the senior quartet of David Grincell, top scorer Willie John Kiely, Gary Dunphy and Joe Mulcahy, all of whom had featured for the first team in Monaghan the previous night. By contrast, Mick Wallace’s side was well stocked with experienced senior players, and they got off to the better start, doing much of the attacking in the opening stages. On 16 minutes they should have taken the lead when a casual Niall Hennebry backpass let Jimmy Keohane in on goal, but he pulled a rushed shot well wide. Five minutes later the Blues nearly went in front as a Trevor Crotty corner kick eluded everyone and clipped the far post, and Crotty was involved again on 34 minutes when his surging run through the centre looked to have set up the breakthrough, the ball moving out left to Declan Woodgate who whipped in a pinpoint cross, nodded inches wide of the far post by the inrushing Robbie Flynn.
