In-form Blues head to Terryland
Waterford United travel to Galway on Saturday to take on league new boys Mervue United at Terryland Park, at the rearranged time of 7.00pm.
The Blues come off the back of two confidence-boosting home wins in three days, as they saw off Limerick and Finn Harps last Saturday and Tuesday respectively. Indeed the last twenty minutes of Tuesday’s match, which was played in appalling conditions, were close to the best seen from United all season, as they scored four goals of real quality, bookended by two outstanding strikes – the first a stunning solo effort from David Grincell, the last a superb free-kick from Alan Carey, both men’s first league goals of the campaign. Blues boss Stephen Henderson was delighted with the performance shown by his side, as they overcame the driving wind and rain, as well as their dogged opponents, to produce some exciting, impressive football.
Waterford hosted Mervue for the first ever meeting of the two sides at the start of May, running out comfortable winners in the end thanks to two strikes in five second half minutes. To that point though, the Galwaymen proved a tough outfit to break down, and indeed the new boys have held their own fairly well against most comers all season. In the last couple of months though, Mervue have struggled to maintain their form, suffering seven defeats out of seven in June and July, including a 4-1 thumping at home to bottom club Kildare County. A single goal defeat to UCD at the Belfield Bowl last time out may be a sign of change though, and the Blues will be taking nothing for granted on Saturday night, and know that a fully focused and professional performance will be required to take maximum points.
The Blues boss has a couple of injuries to concern himself with – striker Willie John Kiely and midfielder Joe Mulcahy are both rated doubtful with dead legs, with the forward the less likely of the pair to feature, and midfielder Paul McCarthy is struggling with an on-going groin injury. There are no suspensions to worry about.

Some pictures from the Finn Harps match
Blues see off Harps with 20 minute blitz
Waterford United 4 – 0 Finn Harps
A twenty minute purple patch from Waterford United blew Finn Harps off the pitch, if not quite out of the water, at a rain-drenched RSC last night.
Though the strong wind and driving rain threatened the staging of the match for a second time, the game went ahead on schedule, and though the home side struggled with the conditions somewhat in the first half, they dominated the exchanges, and could have been a couple of goals to the good by half-time.
Mind you, the visitors might have opened the scoring themselves on 10 minutes, as a Marc Brolly cross-shot from the left was inexplicably left by Kevin Murray for his keeper, forcing Michael Devine into an instinctive reaction save, tipping the ball away from inside his left post. That was to be the Northerners’ best chance of the half though, as the Blues went on to create a succession of chances. Just four minutes later a fine low Graham Cummins cross from the left almost set up Paul Walsh six yards out, but Stephen McLoughlin got back to make a great blocking tackle.
On 20 minutes Cummins again came close to engineering the breakthrough. As he was set away into the left channel, his shot on the run had enough power to beat the Harps keeper Ciaran Gallagher, but was struggling to make the goal-line in the sodden conditions. Centre back Seamus Sharkey probably would have got back to clear anyway, but Walsh came in from an offside position to bundle it over the line and draw the linesman’s flag.
Walsh was having an excellent game down the right side, and was involved in many of the home side’s forays forward, but it was a quick break down the left, and a pin-point cross from Kevin Waters, that created the next chance, picking out Willie John Kiely on the penalty spot, only for the striker’s touch to let him down, allowing Gallagher to claim. Waters looked to be winding up to plant a header inside the far post minutes later, but an uncalled Cummins got in the way of Walsh’s superb right wing cross and the chance was lost. Six minutes from time, a well-worked free kick saw Dave Warren play it low into Kiely’s feet, and advance himself to strike the lay-off goalwards. Though a charging defender took some of the sting from it, Gallagher still had to be sharp to hold the shot.
Despite the chances, it was a far from stellar first half, and things continued in a similar vein after the break, as a low Waters free kick from 20 yards, well held by Gallagher 10 minutes in, was the only chance of the early exchanges, though things did pick up somewhat from then. Just after the hour mark, Waters slipped Cummins free down the left touchline, and as the Harps keeper advanced, the Blues striker slipped it past him from out wide, but again with not enough pace over the waterlogged surface to prevent Packie Mailey from getting back to clear off the line. Cummins was at the heart of everything at this stage, and two minutes later he came closest of all, taking John Kearney’s throw-in expertly on his chest, and hooking an overhead kick to the far corner from 15 yards out, only to see the ball drop onto the crossbar.
On 70 minutes however, a moment of real magic from substitute David Grincell was to turn the game. The young striker had the pace to get to an angled Kearney ball into the left corner of the box, the skill and presence of mind to turn and drive away from the endline and towards the centre of the pitch, leaving two defenders in his wake, and the finish to whip his stunning shot into the top left corner of the net, leaving the keeper rooted to the spot. One more from the scrapbook for the Blues’ talismanic forward, and a timely one for him this season.
Within two minutes, United doubled their lead, fittingly through Cummins, who timed his run to perfection, allowing Kearney to slip a pass through the last two defenders and set him away through the centre, a great first touch and a cool low finish from 15 yards putting the result beyond doubt. Grincell was at the heart of things again on 80 minutes, again working space on the left of the area, cutting back inside and drawing a great low left-handed save from Gallagher with his first effort, and forcing Mailey to handle on the line from the rebound, as it was destined for the same spot in the top left corner. As Mailey headed for an early bath, Cummins steadied himself to send the Harps keeper the wrong way from the spot to make it three.
That ended the game as a competition, but just into injury time Alan Carey put the finishing flourish to a stunning last quarter. After Stephen Grant was fouled slightly to the right of the ‘D’, the right back stepped up to bend an exquisite 20-yard right-footed free kick into the top right corner of the net. It capped a fine Blues performance, and a vital three points with Shelbourne having to play their make-up game at Finn Park next month.

Blues U-20s run riot at Buckley Park
Waterford United U20s 4 – 0 Kilkenny City U20s
The Waterford United Under 20 team travelled to Buckley Park to play Kilkenny City on Sunday last and came away with a comprehensive win. This was a good performance by the young Blues team who applied continuous pressure on the Kilkenny side.
Waterford opened brightly, their fast inter-passing movements keeping the pressure on their opponents from the start, with Paul O’Brien, Paul Carey, Aaron Butler and Gary Keane all getting involved early, and setting the tempo for the game. At the other end the sporadic attacks from the home side were dealt with comfortably by the defence: O’Brien, Eoin Burke, Leo Jacques and captain Kevin Gahan, with the in-form goalkeeper Josh Byrne rarely threatened.
The Blues opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Kenny Purcell put determined pressure on the Kilkenny defence as they tried to clear, and the ball ricocheted high into the home net. Shortly afterwards Declan Woodgate was forced to leave the field through a recurring toe injury and was replaced by new signing Ben Ryan, whose intelligent play and distribution had an immediate effect on the game. The Blues continued to open up the home defence and shots from Keane, Jacques, Butler and Andrew Power all tested the Kilkenny keeper. He could do little about Waterford’s second, however, as on 40 minutes Eoin Burke broke through from the middle and unleashed a 30 yard drive low and hard to the back of the net.
Kilkenny began the second half determined to get back into the game but Waterford held firm and a great cross from Paul O’Brien was controlled superbly by Ben Ryan and confidently side-footed home for goal number three. John Whitty replaced Kenny Purcell on 76 minutes and he was quickly into the action, neatly beating two defenders and slotting home five minutes later, following excellent work by Gary Keane to put him through with a defence-splitting pass.
That wrapped up the scoring, and it was a good, strong, all-round performance by the young Blues. They played with determination and a will to win, and this team is well worth watching as these are very much the Waterford players of the future. Their next game is home to Limerick on Saturday 1st August at 2.00pm, at the Waterford Crystal Sports Centre.
Team: Josh Byrne, Paul O’Brien, Kevin Gahan, Leo Jacques, Eoin Burke, Paul Carey, Aaron Butler, Andrew Power, Declan Woodgate (Ben Ryan 34), Kenny Purcell, Gary Keane (John Whitty 76) – subs: Moses Okereafor, Robbie Flynn, Ian Daly

Blues gear up for Harps’ second coming
Waterford United are quickly back in action host Finn Harps in a re-fixed match at the RSC on Tuesday night (KO 7.45pm).
The game originally fell foul of the sudden torrential downpours that fell on the city on the afternoon of July 11th, a cancellation that was unavoidable, but unfortunately meant the recall of a Harps squad that had all but reached their destination. The Donegal men make the long trip once more on Tuesday, to a ground where they have had some success in recent times. Heading northwards with a point on each of their last three trips, they also secured promotion via the play-offs on their most recent visit to the RSC, a 3-3 draw in November of 2007 following a 3-0 win at Finn Park three days earlier.
Earlier this season, United recorded an impressive 3-1 win at Ballybofey, always a tough place to go looking for a result, but Finn Harps have improved hugely since then, notching notable victories over Sporting Fingal and Ipswich Town in a recent four game unbeaten run. That run ended with defeat to Wexford Youths at the weekend, and the Blues will be hoping that they can complete a South East double over the Ulstermen. Certainly their tails will be up after a deserved, if hard-fought, defeat of Limerick at the RSC on Saturday, a vital three points to get their title challenge back on track. To that end, Stephen Henderson will have no injury concerns amongst the squad, and there are no suspensions in operation.

Action from the Limerick game at the RSC
Blues have too much for Limerick in Munster derby
Waterford United 2 - 1 Limerick FC
Waterford United returned to winning ways in the league with a deserved, if not altogether convincing victory over Limerick at the RSC. The Blues were in need of all three points to revitalise their title challenge, and they got off to a bright start on two minutes, when Willie John Kiely spun neatly on Dave Warren’s low drilled pass, but pulled his left foot volley tamely wide of the far post. Three minutes later, at the other end, Shane Tracey fired wildly wide for the visitors from 20 yards, but the home side kept on the front foot in the opening exchanges, and went ahead 11 minutes in, when a fine move was capped by a somewhat fortunate finish. Warren clipped in a fine angled pass to Paul Walsh deep in the right side of the area. Walsh did wonderfully well to pull the ball down on the endline, get it under control, and rifle in a superb low cross which Brian O’Callaghan, stationed at the near post, could only divert into the net past goalkeeper Dave Ryan, who had moved out off his line to try to intercept.
With the deadlock broken so early, the Blues might have been hoping to kick on into an unassailable lead nice and early too, but in a fairly flat first half they couldn’t quite create a second genuine scoring chance. Bookending another wild Shane Tracey effort from distance on 26 minutes, Kiely had two good sights of goal but couldn’t find the target, first fluffing his volley straight at Ryan when nicely teed up by Graham Cummins’ headed knock down, then attempting a quick chip from wide on the left after the ball broke free from his strike partner’s challenge on the keeper outside the area. Cummins in turn missed what was a better chance than he might have realised when he just didn’t put enough on a glancing header from John Kearney’s cross and the ball flew well wide of the far post. And another good move came to naught three minutes from the break, when Kiely cleverly chested down Walsh’s cross into the path of Warren, but the 20 yard effort was too high to trouble Ryan further.
Moments before, the home side had a scare when a long ball over the top set John Tierney away into the right channel, and he went down under the challenge of Michael Devine rushing out off his line. The assistant referee flagged instantly, however, and rather than award the penalty for which the visiting fans were baying, the referee ran to the scene pointing for a free out, and booked Tierney for diving.
The second half began pretty much as the first had ended, Cummins with the opening chance, but firing straight at Ryan after Kiely had set him away nicely. At the other end a mix up in defence between Kenny Browne and Kevin Murray caused momentary panic in the Blues’ box. Alan Carey was on hand to tidy up, but he himself dawdled and let Dean Finnan rob him, but the cross was poorly directed. As the tempo and the quality of the game increased, Kiely again had two good sights of goal in quick succession around ten minutes into the half. First, having ridden a bad challenge and exchanged a neat 1-2 with Walsh, the Dungarvan man saw his well struck effort deflected behind by Niall Donnelly. Then Seamus Long picked him out on the edge of the area with an excellent through ball, another deft turn, a quick chip, but the ball floated just wide of the right hand post.
Limerick fashioned another half-chance at the other end, and again it was Tracey that was in the thick of it. When Devine tipped a well-flighted corner away, the Limerick midfielder picked it up on the left corner of the box, drove fiercely against the legs of the massed Blues defence, and then hammered the rebound wide of the near post. But within minutes the home side were further in front, when the same eagle-eyed linesman that denied the Shannonsiders the first half penalty spotted Graham Cummins being bundled over in the box by Martin Deady. The big striker dusted himself off to take the kick himself, and though Ryan did superbly to save low to his left, Cummins drove the rebound home from eight yards.
Waterford were attacking with confidence now, and twice Cummins almost turned provider for Kiely, teeing his strike partner up both times from the left side, first for Donnelly to charge down the shot, and then forcing Ryan to rush out to make a great blocking save. A super move down the right side on 80 minutes saw Long pick up a half-clearance and split the defence to find Walsh, with Donnelly just beating Kiely to the near post cross.
The visitors made the last few minutes much more tense than they should have been however, when Kevin Murray was adjudged to have pulled back John Tierney as a long ball into the Blues box wasn’t properly dealt with. Devine guessed right on the resulting penalty, but Tracey’s placement was perfect as it flew inside the right hand post. Limerick tried hard to get back on terms in the dying minutes, but a handful of free kicks into the area was all they could muster, and the home side saw out the victory with no more scares, and added a vital three points to their total. The later scoreline which arrived from Athlone added immensely to the good result, and only reinforced the idea that this league is far from over!
