Waterford United v Athlone Town at the RSC
Friday, April 13th, 2012 (KO 7.45pm)
Airtricity League Division One
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Having put a stop to a four-game losing streak, Waterford United will be looking to build on last week’s away draw when they welcome Athlone Town to the RSC on Friday (KO 7.45pm).
The Blues were held scoreless by Mervue United at Fahy’s Field, but though in some ways an unsatisfying result, United boss Paul O’Brien took many positives from the game, which he will be hoping to bring to bear on the next one. His side were disciplined and well organised at the back, created a number of chances up front, and in addition got a full 90 minutes out of a couple of previously injured first teamers in full back John Frost and forward Daragh Walshe.
Athlone have had their own troubles in recent weeks, having lost the last three matches in a row after an impressive three wins in four at the start of the campaign. And they will not want to be reminded of their last visit to the RSC when a Paul Murphy hat-trick inspired the Blues to a comprehensive 5-1 victory. United would very much like to emulate that feat, but will need to get their shooting boots on. Having failed to trouble the scorers for the last two games, they really will need to start converting some of the chances they are creating if they are to start climbing the table once more.
O’Brien will be further boosted by the return of defender Seamus Long from suspension, but despite being named on the bench in Galway, striker Willie John Kiely remains a slight doubt for Friday’s game, with a decision to be made closer to matchday. Adam McSherry, Gary Keane and David Breen remain on the injury list.
O’Brien Quotes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“We didn’t take the full points I felt a disciplined performance deserved.”
“We were solid at the back and created numerous chances up front which was pleasing.”
“The fact that we didn’t score was the only negative on the night, and if we can keep getting our injured experienced players back I’m confident we can put a run together.”
“We’ll definitely get stronger as we get more lads back in contention.”
