Blues through to MSC Final
Clonmel Town 1 – 2 Waterford United
Waterford United tonight overcame a determined Clonmel Town side in the Munster Senior Cup semi-final at Dr Pat O’Callaghan Park.
David Grincell was the star of the show, netting twice for the Blues, but he was ably assisted by a man-of-the-match performance from Declan Woodgate at left back. On 27 minutes Grincell forced a fine save from the Clonmel keeper after Kevin Waters crossed, and the same player glanced an exquisite header to put United ahead from Woodgate’s resultant corner.
Just seven minutes later, however, the home side drew level, as Kevin Burns was caught out by a long range David McGrath effort which slipped through his grasp. Clonmel’s respite lasted only moments though, and Grincell popped up to touch home a Woodgate cross into the roof of the net to regain the lead, a lead the Blues never looked like relinquishing again.
On a bumpy and rock hard pitch, the Blues finished the more comfortable side, despite the slim margin, and indeed has several chacnes to put the game beyond doubt, but they were not required. United now advance to the Munster Senior Cup Final against Rockmount at Turner’s Cross, with a date and tme to be advised.
