Cup Winning Team of 1980 to be Honoured at Cup Final

For the second year in a row Waterford will have a team at the FAI Cup Final. Throughout the year the FAI has recognised special moments in the history of the FAI Cup at the draw for each round of the FAI Carlsberg Senior Challenge Cup.In keeping with this theme the Association is delighted to announce that it has teamed up with The Star for the inaugural The Star/FAI Cup Silver Jubilee Team which is to be awarded to the Waterford team which defeated St Patrick’s Athletic 1 – 0 in the 1980 Cup Final courtesy of a goal from full back, Brian Gardiner.That Waterford team, which was managed by Tommy Jackson, contained such great characters of Irish football as Peter Thomas, Tony Dunphy, Al Finnucane and Syd Wallace.As well as receiving a momento of the occasion the The Star/FAI Cup Silver Jubilee team will be introduced to the crowd at Sunday’s final.Waterford FC Cup Winners 1980: Peter Thomas; Ger O’Mahony; Al Finnucane; Tony Dunphy; Brian Gardiner; Mark Meeagan; Mick Madigan; Vinny McCarthy; Larry Murray; Syd Wallace; Paul Kirk.
