Adam McSherry has taken part in just three League games for Waterford United, but already he is turning into something of a fan’s favourite in the RSC. The former Carrick United man made his Blues debut in the 1-0 defeat to Finn Harps, but two games, and six points later, the Blues are already in a healthier position in the League table.
“It’s really nice to be here”, he said, “They have made me feel really welcome and it’s a massive challenge. It’s a challenge that I’ve wanted for the last number of years but unfortunately it hasn’t always been plain sailing with injuries. McSherry is hopeful of a “successful time at Waterford United” and spoke of his delight to “have started it with two goals but more important for the team, three points.”
The 23-year-old admits he needs to improve his fitness level a little, and whether it be up front or in midfield, the Clonmel native doesn’t mind once he plays. “I just need to get the fitness up a small bit, I’m still getting used to the lads too. Everyone here has serious quality, it’s just about sticking together. I can play midfield, or I can play up front. I’m a target man when I’m up front, but it’s a team game, so I’ll play wherever they want me to play as long as I’m playing.”
Having scored a brace against Salthill Devon, McSherry was delighted with a home debut to remember. “I’m over the moon, it was a long time coming. Two goals, I couldn’t ask for anymore. To get two goals on my [home] debut is a dream come true”, McSherry said. “Some people have said to me that I could have got a hat-trick but my header came when I was getting a little bit tired. But like I said, if we believe in ourselves more we will do well this season. I played 15 minutes against Finn Harps but… I think I can go on and help the team move up the League table.”
The attacker had a word of thanks to Carrick United and also to former Blues boss Stephen Henderson who had signed the player before his departure from the club.
“I have to say thanks to Carrick for everything they have done for me. I have to admit it has proved to be a massive step up from playing in the Junior League but I have to say that Carrick United trained very hard and are the sharpest team in the League, however believe me this League is faster by a great deal.”
“The commitment at Carrick was fantastic and there is more to come from them but I have to admit also that I am beginning to love this club already. I will always be grateful to Stephen Henderson because he was the man who signed me. That said the new lads who are managing the team now are great and they are trying to get us playing the right way.”
With three wins from the last four games, the Blues are already attempting to turn their season around, and McSherry believes they can do it. “We must start believing in ourselves from here until the end of the season and if we do that I think we will be fine, I really do. There is a great buzz at training and you can feel the confidence coming back into the squad.”
