Waterford United tonight progressed to the second round of the EA Sports Cup with a comfortable 4-0 win over Tralee Dynamos at Mounthawk Park.

On a windswept pitch, actually the home of the Kerry League (the venue was switched just across the road from Dynamo’s Cahermoneen ground), the visitors created plenty of chances in the first half, but at the break were only one goal to the good, through Michael Rafter on 21 minutes.

Shane Dempsey doubled the lead five minutes after the restart, firing a free kick low and hard under the keeper’s body, and the tie was put beyond doubt by a brilliant goal from Gary Keane on 66 minutes, after good work from Rafter and Paul Murphy. David Breen’s 80th minute header put the icing on the cake, and set up a second round tie against Limerick at Jackman Park, on or around Monday, April 25th.
