Waterford United 5 – 1 Waterford League Selection
Daragh Walshe bagged four second half goals as Waterford United overcame a select side consisting of Waterford Junior League players and Blues Under 19s in a charity fundraiser for the Waterford branch of the Irish Kidney Foundation today.
The game got off to a late start for lack of a ref, until Tommy Griffin kindly stepped into the breach. And the teams were fairly evenly matched in the first 45, though United were first out of the blocks. Walshe served notice of intent early on, bringing a fine save from Sean Whitty after Peter Keegan and Gary Dempsey combined beautifully to set him up, then Ben Ryan smacked a long range drive off the foot of the post. Half an hour into the game the home side had something of a setback as John Frost was forced to give way to Paul Carey, but within minutes they had broken the deadlock, as Peter White glanced home a header from Dempsey’s free kick. The scratch XI did craft a good late chance when David Cooley set Adam Potter away, but he shot wide on the run.
The game exploded in a flurry of goalmouth action after the restart, as sub Nathan West brought matters level within four minutes, slamming home the rebound after Packie Holden turned a Sean Maguire effort onto the post. Within three minutes though the lead was re-established, Daragh Walshe firing in the first of his four from close range. In fact, those four goals came in a 17 minute purple patch for the big striker. A right foot finish from Ben Ryan’s right wing cross, and another from Paul Phelan’s fine pass from the left made it a hat-trick on the hour mark, and he wrapped up the quartet with the help of Peter Keegan on 69 minutes. Phelan himself hit the upright with a long-range effort shortly afterwards, but the Blues were happy to settle for a great run-out and a number of excellent performances, not least from the four-goal hero.
