Waterford Utd v Galway Utd, Tuesday 7th Feb 1995

(first published in the August 2010 Wexford Youths match programme)

This week we travel back a mere 15 years in time, to a chilly February night and a Cup first round replay against Galway United at the nascent RSC, with the (then ‘new’) stand still a couple of months from completion. Sandwiched between adverts for Egan’s Bar and Bourbon Street Nite Club (“Home of Flow Motion and Flare” for those of us of a certain vintage), and the ICC Bank promoting their early days of the Celtic Tiger Special Savings Accounts (how little we knew then!), the match night programme contains several articles of interest from this remove, not least the Blues pen pictures, and a short report of the original drawn tie at Terryland Park, both reproduced below. On the night, with the score at 1-1, the match was abandoned due to torrential rain, and, after a series of further postponements, unfortunately the Premier division side proved too strong in the final replay, winning 2-0 and ending our interest in the Cup. A League campaign that promised much, with Johnny Matthews back at the helm, was also to end in disappointment, two agonising points short of the play-off spot.

Pen Pictures
Scott Garlich: 22 year old American keeper signed last summer from San Diego University FC, quickly establishing himself as one of the best keepers in the First Division.
Ashley Stephenson: 20 year old English Schoolboy International, also joined United in the summer, from Bristol City. Due to the performances of Scott Garlich is unable to command a fist team place.
Clem Fanning: Joined the Blues from Waterford Bohemians in 1993 and made his debut away to Finn Harps that September. Made 21 appearances last season.
Brian Barry: 21 year old left back from Carrick-on-Suir. Former Schoolboy and Youth International. Signed for Waterford from Carrick United in 1989 and has already played over 100 games for the club.
Alan Barry: Strong and powerful 32 year old central defender who played his local football with De La Salle before gaining League of Ireland experience with Thurles Town and Newcastlewest. Joined Waterford United in 1989, became club captain, and has been voted Player of the Year for the past four seasons.
Peter Crowley: 34 year old former Junior International who joined Waterford United from Waterford Bohemians in the summer of 1993. Played 22 games last year, and has been ever-present this season.
Paul Cashin: New Ross born 27 year old skilful midfielder who has played with Cobh and spent the last two seasons with Shamrock Rovers, playing in 28 League games before rejoining the Blues during the summer. An injury in pre-season has meant that he has only just broken into the squad.
Brian Arrigan: 20 year old midfielder signed from local club Southend United in 1992, making his debut in a 3-3 home draw against Drogheda United later that year. Played over 50 times for the Blues, scoring 6 times.
Kevin Kelly: Born in Carrick-on-Suir, 26 year old former Schoolboy and Youth International. Spent two seasons with Cardiff City after leaving local club Carrick United, before returning to sign for Waterford. Spent last season at Cobh Ramblers before recently rejoining the Blues.
Jose Quintongo: Exciting 20 year old player with plenty of skill. Signed full-time professional forms for the club from Portugese club Estoril in the summer. Has scored four goals this season.
Jimmy Barden: Very versatile player who can play easily in defence, midfield and attack. 21 year old signed from local club Southend United in the summer of 1993.
Pascal Keane: 27 year old proven goal-scorer in the League of Ireland. Played local football with Johnville and the Villa, and in the Munster Senior League with Dungarvan United, and also played with Cobh and St Patrick’s Athletic. Has played over 80 League games for the Blues, scoring 25 goals.
Pat Arrigan: The 26 year old made his debut against Galway United in December 1988. Won promotion with Waterford after a spell with Dungarvan, but returned to Junior football with Tycor FC before re-signing with the Blues last summer.
Alan Hardy: Dublin born 20 year old defender who was plucked from non-league football by Waterford’s reserve team manager Seamie Coad, and after some great performances for the reserves was given his League of Ireland debut away to Bray Wanderers last month.
Alan Reynolds: Very promising 20 year old who was signed from Tramore FC in September 1991 and has since played over 70 times for the club, scoring twice.

Blues Cash-In!
Galway Utd 2-2 Waterford Utd
Waterford earned themselves a deserved FAI Cup first round replay when Paul Cashin struck with a perfect volley three minutes from time at Terryland Park on Wednesday night last.
The Blues punished Galway for losing the initiative after Mark Herrick put them in front midway through the second half. Waterford were the better of the teams for most of the first half, and were twice unlucky not to go ahead through Jose Quintongo.
In the second half Galway keeper Norman Costello was fortunate not to be shown a red card when he brought down Pascal Keane in the box for a penalty with which Kevin Kelly made no mistake. That goal seemed to galvanise Galway who were back level within 90 seconds when Billy Clery headed home from a Ronan Killeen corner at the far post.
Galway then took control and seemed to be coasting when Barry Ryan provided a perfect first touch for Mark Herrick to put Galway ahead after 66 minutes, shooting into the top right hand corner. But Galway sat back on their lead, allowing Waterford to eventually haul back the deficit.
It was Cashin who silenced the large home crowd with the best strike of the night to force the tie to a replay.
