Interview With A Blues Fan: Walter Flynn
(first published in the May 2009 Wexford Youths Programme)
Who or what first got you supporting the Blues? My Dad used to bring me to Kilcohan, sitting in the old stand on Sunday mornings, best thing ever happened me
Can you remember your first match? I can’t but I remember Kevin Power being involved at the time
How often would you get to the RSC? Every home game
Any improvements you’d like to see to the ground? Would be nice to name the stands for identification, New Stand and Old Stand ain’t the most romantic notions. Also a scoreboard would be nice.
Any improvements to the matchday experience? Better atmosphere, the Ultra lads do a great job and it would be nice to see more getting involved with singing or even waving flags with them or individually.
How many away trips would you make a season? About 60% of the away games, they are the best part of supporting the club
Favourite away ground? Tolka (Burdocks chipper)
Best ever away trip? Myself, Tony Barry and Martin Colbert being the only 3 Blues fans in the Brandywell a few years back seeing Vinny score the goal that kept us up, Daryl scoring at Dundalk to win the 1st under Jimmy and that night in Daylers against Rovers
Favourite current Blues player? Joey Mulcahy (the happy head on him)
Favourite all-time Blues player? Daryl Murphy
What current league player would you like to see in a blue shirt? Peter Hutton, a gentleman and a touch of class
Best moment as a Blues fan? Winning the First Division under Jimmy
And the worst? Two balls on the pitch
What’s your funniest memory of supporting United? Hands down Tony Barry going to catch the ball in St Coleman’s, over-extending and falling straight over the side wall (sorry Tony)
Best thing about supporting the Blues? Making so many good friends and having so many good memories, like a big family, we may have our differences but everyone is 100% genuine
