Waterford United’s Under-20 side got their season off to a flying start when they overcame a strong Wexford Youths outfit on their home patch in a superb match at Ferrycarrig Park tonight.

The Blues took the lead half-way through the first half through Gavin Falconer, and went into the break in the ascendancy. A defensive error just after half time let the home side back in again though, Ian Sinnott restoring parity. A pulsating second half played out, but United took three well earned points minutes from time, when great work from Paul Murphy and Aidan McGrath set up Robbie Farrell for the winning header.

The young Blues were buzzing after a fantastic opening day victory against one of the strongest sides in the country at Under-20, a great boost for the whole squad, and all the talk after the game was about the higher level they were compelled to play at to compete with the Youths, and to secure the win. There were superb performances across the board from everyone in a blue shirt, but Man of the Match was undoubtedly Aidan McGrath, a wonderful display from the Clonmel native, definitely one to watch at just 16 years old.

United are at home to UCD next, at the RSC on Sunday July 18th with a 2.00pm kick-off. If you’re not going to be travelling to Ballybofey on Friday, why not come along and give the lads your support!
